ABOUT OUR OFFICE
Jarrett Construction Services at the Capito House in Charleston’s historic East End District.”
Our office, a 5,600 square foot building, is one of Charleston’s best examples of Neoclassical Revival architecture. It is also the greatest testament to our historical restoration abilities – and our greatest labor of construction love.
Originally constructed in 1907, the building sat empty for over a year in 2004. With a leaking basement and roof, cracking wood and falling plaster among its more obvious charms, this landmark was facing certain demolition if it fell into the hands of developers. As fate would have it, a “For Sale” sign appeared in the yard just as we had outgrown our current office and the rest, as they say, is history.
Renovation work began in January of 2005. Exterior problems that required remedy included, but were certainly not limited to: five chimneys needing repointing or in some cases rebuilt, existing brickwork needing cleaned and repointed, the scraping, sanding and painting of exterior trim, the refurbishment of four massive columns, installation of a new concrete drive and extensive landscaping, just to name a few.
While the exterior required work, the interior required complete reworking. Extensive wood refinishing was necessary for the 54” wainscoting, the 7’ 4” five-panel, solid wood doors, the hardwood floors and coffered ceilings. Additionally, all operable windows were removed, repaired and repainted and each sash cord replaced along with any inoperable pulleys or missing hardware. The “workings” of the house required replacement as well, including the plumbing, heating, air conditioning and wiring.
The scrupulous attention paid to detail and the commitment to quality evidenced in this renovation is of great service to our clients; it acts as a constant reminder to us of those characteristics with which we approach each and every project.
